Project Overview
The Nakamura Residence was a 1972 ranch home that had been added to over decades. The result was a house that had lost its logic. The renovation stripped it back to its bones and rebuilt it around a single organizing principle: the Japanese concept of ma — negative space that gives positive space its meaning.
Walls were removed to create flowing sequences of rooms. A new entry courtyard was added. The kitchen and living areas were reconnected to a rear garden that had been visible from nowhere in the original plan.
