Project Overview
Solstice Retreat sits on a volcanic plateau east of Bend with uninterrupted views of the Three Sisters. The brief was unusual: the clients wanted a house that felt different to live in at different times of year.
The orientation, fenestration, and material palette were all chosen with this in mind. In winter, the rammed earth walls absorb and radiate warmth. In summer, deep overhangs create shadow. At solstice, the light enters through a precisely positioned skylight to mark the longest and shortest days.
